buildingSMART
Up one levelWhat is buildingSMART?
BuildingSMART is an alliance of organisations within the construction and facilities management industries dedicated to improving processes within the industry through defining the use and sharing of information. Organizations within the alliance include architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, facility managers, manufacturers, software vendors, information providers, government agencies, research laboratories, universities and more.
BSI have published 2 reports on BIM
The British Standards Institution invited BuildingSMART UK – the organisation that promotes BIM-enabled smart working – to produce a straight to the point guide to building information modelling, Constructing the Business Case. The publication sets out the case for BIM adoption and explains the underlying technologies to stimulate uptake in the construction and FM industries. For busy CEOs, a shorter document is also available. Known as the Investors Report, it distils the business case into two pages – enough to enable senior leaders to understand the principles and direct their staff to the longer publication. These reports can be accessed on BSI's website. See link below:

Wisconsin First State to Require BIM for State Projects
Another major client is demanding BIM, and has authored the guidelines to support this.
The Value of Building Information Modeling: Can We Measure the ROI of BIM?
With the increasing number of case studies on the topic of BIM in practice, anecdotal evidence suggests that the use of BIM makes the building industry more efficient and effective. However, these case studies can only provide insight into singular situations; they fail to provide a complete and comprehensive list of benefits and associated costs and they rarely assign quantitative values. The question still remains: is BIM really lowering costs and making the building industry more productive? The intuitive answer is ‘yes’ but what is really needed are models for establishing metrics and benchmarks, so the benefits of BIM can established more definitively.
Another US State demands BIM
Apparently, even Building Information Modeling is bigger in Texas. The Texas Facilities Commission announced yesterday that it is requiring a BIM model for all state design and construction projects. The state agency oversees all real estate development for the state including state buildings and all state University systems. Currently, the Facilities Design and Construction division is managing 125 projects valued at over $500 million.
